Buying furniture that will last

protecting your furnitureHaving beautiful furniture doesn’t have to be an illusion when it comes to families with young children. With your kids running around, jumping on furniture and spilling their food, keeping your furniture looking new can sometimes seem like a unattainable dream. However, if you shop correctly when looking for furniture, that dream can quickly become reality.

The type of cover you choose for your furniture is very important. Many fabrics come with anti-stain features or treatments to protect against spills and stains.  Microfiber repels moisture remarkably and comes in a dazzling array of colors and suede like finishes. Genuine leather can also be an excellent choice because of its durability and strength. Many leather finishes have a naturally distressed look that won’t show wear and tear over a period of time.  A sofa with a washable slipcover sofa also protects your investment during the messy years.

It’s almost guaranteed that at one time or another your kids will jump on your living room pieces, so make sure durability is high on your list of things to consider. The construction of the pieces play a huge role in the longevity of your furniture. Living room pieces should have a strong frame and high density cushions. Multiple furniture pieces like sofas, loveseats, and recliners can also be very beneficial. It gives you the luxury of rearranging your room as your beautiful family changes.

Spring Cleaning Your Upholstery

BD7EG6Q7UG3F
springcleaningAhhhh, Spring! As we finally turn the calendar on this beautiful season, many people take advantage of spring’s bright sunshine and fresh breezes to clear their homes from dust and dirt that have accumulated over a long winter. While closets, counters, windows, floors, tables, and carpets are at the mercy of the cleaning crew, don’t neglect your upholstered furniture such as sofas, loveseats, chairs and recliners.

The dirt that gathers on solid surfaces such as floors and tables is easy to see and clean. Consider that this same dirt and dust you clean from your end tables, often several times a week, has also settled on your upholstered furniture.  ‘

How can you properly spring clean your upholstery to keep it looking new?

  • Vacuum all surfaces of your upholstered furniture including both sides of any removable cushions. Use your vacuum cleaners crevice tool and dust brush attachments to get into deep corners. Always use the dust brush on leather furniture so suction doesn’t damage the surface.
  • Flip and rotate your cushions.  Turn your cushions over and rotate them to even out the wear and make the inner cushion and the fabric last longer. This should be done each month, not only in the spring.
  • Rearrange your furniture. The ultraviolet rays from direct sunlight can fade fabric and leather, just like it damages your skin, depriving your furniture of its gorgeous look. Use window blinds or sheers on windows to minimize the sun rays.
  • Massage your furniture. That’s right, start from the bottom of the arms and back and push the stuffing up, giving it a full look. This works air back into the synthetic fibers and keeps it nice and cushy.

Protect your Mattress and your Peaceful Nights Sleep

how to protect your mattress from spillsOne third of your life is spent sleeping on your Sealy™ mattress, recharging your batteries for tomorrow’s tasks. One of the most imperative furniture pieces you own deserves to be protected from liquid stains that can penetrate your sheets and leave foul odors and stains on your bedding.

Preventing liquids such as urine, sweat, drinks and food from reaching your mattress is pretty simple: just keep it covered. Putting a garbage bag under the sheets making your child sleep on a human noise maker all night, giving them the gift of grumpiness, is not the answer.  Instead, wrap your mattress and pillows with a Royal Heritage® Mattress Protector and Royal Heritage® Pillow protector. Mattress and pillow protectors keep any type of liquid from leaving stains or odors behind. Our mattress and pillow protectors will keep your mattress and pillows fresh, allowing you to sleep in a peaceful state and preserve your warranty coverage.

There are additional steps you can take to keep your mattress clean. Vacuuming the mattress is the only technique Sealy™   recommends. If the unthinkable does happen and some sort of liquid reaches the mattress, Sealy™  recommends using only mild soap and cold water, and applying it lightly. Don’t ever soak a mattress or box spring, and don’t use dry cleaning solvents which could damage the construction materials.
