Protecting against hazards you can’t see

protecting against hazards you cant seePreparing a nursery for your soon-to-be-newborn is a very special time for parents. You want the room to be completely safe; a beautiful living space for your new special treasure but free from any hazards. But how do you protect them from the hazards you can’t see? Here are some safe and healthy ways to create a living space for your little one.

Avoid hazards you can’t see

Keeping the room safe doesn’t just mean ensuring the edges of furniture pieces are rounded and protectors are in the plugs. You have to protect your little one from things that cannot be seen. This means staying away from synthetic materials that give off formaldehyde gas. Items like press board and plastics are the culprits in this case. Instead, choose furniture made out of natural wood that is not finished. It’s pretty much guaranteed that during your baby’s gumming stage, s/he will come in contact with the crib or other pieces of furniture. Be sure to stay away from painted or stained materials for their safety as well.

Keep it simple and clean

Today’s current fashion is a contemporary style. The modern-and-chic look is one of simplicity, where only a few items are used to bring life to the room. Use colors sparingly is the key here, and stay away from over-using pastels. Go with a calm color for the walls.  This will allow for wall murals or cozy rugs to stand out more, adding style to the room.

Safe walls for little hands

On the theme of non-toxic products, it’s important that the walls of the room are safe from any artificial materials. If you’re choosing wallpaper for the room, look to have it professionally installed with non-toxic wallpaper paste. If you choose to paint, zero-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) is your best bet here and can be customized to match almost any color you need.

Natural Baby Bedding

Toxins can also be found in bedding. Your baby’s skin will be in contact with nursery bedding for many hours each day. A baby’s skin is very sensitive in the early years, so it’s important to keep their skin safe from substances that cause irritation. Choose natural fabrics like cotton instead of synthetics. This also goes for crib bumpers, pillow inserts, covers and changing pads.

Placing bedroom furniture so you can wake up pain free

B3600How many times have you awaken from a great night’s sleep only to have your morning ruined by the painful feeling of banging one of your toes or shins against a dresser or another piece of furniture?
It has happened to all of us at one time or another, but the great thing is it doesn’t have to anymore! Arranging the furniture in your bedroom can be tricky, especially when you are working with limited space. The following steps will help you not only add more comfort and style to your bedroom, but it will save you from mornings filled will toe throbbing pain:
1.    Sketch the layout of your bedroom on a piece of paper. Include measurements and placement of all radiators, doors, and windows.
2.    Get the measurements of all your furniture. You can either write it down or if you are creative enough, make cutouts of each furniture piece.
3.    Place the cutouts on the paper and move them around until you get the desired layout you want. Make sure the spacing between furniture pieces is big enough, giving you the peace of mind knowing that you won’t be bumping into anything when you wake up.
4.    Make sure your room is clutter free! Clearing out clutter from the corners of the room will give you better energy flow. Exposed electrical equipment emits electromagnetic waves, which can hinder a peaceful night of sleep. Instead, hide wires from electrical equipment in units with doors.

Putting together the perfect guest room

putting together the perfect guest roomSpending the night in an unfamiliar room can be such a drag sometimes, especially when the sleeping conditions are reminiscent of sleeping in the great outdoors.  So why would you want to put your guest through that same experience?

Take into consideration the things that make you feel at peace when staying in an unfamiliar place.  This is the most important factor to make your guests feel right at home in a guest room. It will also give them a warm and cozy feeling knowing their comfort was thought of when you invited them into your home.

Follow these suggestions when shopping at your local PMD Furniture Direct™ franchisee to create a comfortable, relaxing experience for your guests:

  1. Keep it clutter free. Remove any furniture that might give the room a cluttered feel. Guests will feel more at home if they have enough room to accommodate themselves.
  2. Don’t furnish with all your unwanted furniture. This too can make a room feel cluttered and hodge-podge.
  3. Give the bed all the comfort you would want if you were sleeping on it. Provide extra pillows and don’t skimp on the linens. A thick duvet isn’t a bad idea either.
  4. Provide a nightstand next to the bed. This could be a great place for a lamp for reading purposes.
  5. Place a bowl of candy, magazines, books or flowers in the room to make your guests feel welcomed.
  6. Hang a mirror on the wall so they have a place to freshen up.
  7. A clock radio, wastebasket, iron and ironing board, tissues and a bottle of water are nice personal touches.

When creating a comfortable guest room for your dearest friends, visit your local PMD Furniture Direct™ franchisee to find the perfect pieces of furniture from the Royal Heritage Home Furnishings® Collection that will give your guest a home away from home experience.

Making Sure Your Bunk Bed Is Safe

S150A parents most important job in life is the safety and protection of their children. From the day our kids are born, we do everything we can making sure their surroundings are free from harm. We baby proof our house, we make sure they have food that they can eat, and we always make sure the toys they play with are age appropriate. But how can we watch over them and protect them when everyone is asleep?

Bunk Beds are one of the most popular beds for youth bedroom furniture. Besides being a real space saver, there is something appealing to kids that makes sleeping high off the ground awesome!

Here are a few precautions you can follow that will help make your child’s bunk bed more secure.

  1. Make sure your child is age appropriate for a bunk bed. Bunk beds will let you know, like many toys, the proper age of children that should be allowed to sleep on the bed. This is a very over looked rule, and many times smaller children can slip underneath the rails. Have your child test out the bed before you buy it.
  2. The top bunk should always have a guardrail on all four sides, even if it will be placed against a wall. There should be no more than 9 centimeters (3.54 inches) between the bottom of the rail and the frame of the bed to prevent the child from becoming trapped between the rail and the frame.
  3. It’s essential to use the proper size mattress on your bunk bed. Make sure the mattress you buy fits snugly against all edges of the bed frame. If you buy an extra long bunk bed, make sure the mattress is extra long as well.

Visit your PMD Furniture Direct ™ franchisee for fun and functional youth bedroom furniture, where you’ll also find the Royal Heritage Home Furnishings® Bedding Collection with a wide assortment of mattresses to safely fit your bunk beds (and grown up beds!) for a safe and sound night’s sleep.

What is Eco-friendly furniture?

eco-friendly-phonesThe way people think about our relationship to the earth is changing. The smallest details of the way we live our lives are now being reexamined for their effect on the ecosphere and changes to our lifestyles are being made accordingly. It might surprise you to hear, but this eco-consciousness has now even turned its attention to our furniture, probably one of the last places you’d ordinarily look when considering the environment. If furniture is made out of wood, and getting that wood is part of a process that could be putting strain on the environment, then you might be asking how a piece of furniture could ever be considered “eco-friendly.” Well, luckily for us there are a few standards already in place for such questions.

•    The first classification is the most clear. Has some material other than wood been used to create the piece of furniture ? Using a material other than wood shows that the manufacture of this product is not using resources from nature for the sole purpose of creating furniture.
•    The second classification is a bit surprising. The forest Stewardship Council has devised a certification that can deem a piece of furniture as Eco-Friendly. In order for a piece of furniture to be certified as Eco-friendly, the manufacturer must demonstrate that they are replanting trees in place of trees being cut down. So a piece of furniture can now be made of wood and still be considered Eco-friendly.
•    A final classification for Eco-friendly furniture is based on the amount of extras that are used to create the piece of furniture. Many people who are Eco-conscious believe furniture that is kind to the environment should be simple , using the bare minimum for wood, padding, vinyl, fabric, and leather. Simple styles and less-is-more design are key when considering whether a piece of furniture is Eco-friendly.

And there you have it. If reducing your carbon footprint is important to you, these tips should help you find the furniture that fits not just your home, but your ideals.

Flipping your mattress

plush_sealy_mattress_1How many times have flipped your mattress in the past year. Once? Twice? Five times? 104 times? How ’bout NONE.

Surprisingly, 1, 2, 5, and 104 times are the number of times people assume we should flip our mattress in a given year. However, the number of times a mattress should be flipped depends solely on the individual and their sleeping situation – mostly whether they are sleeping alone or with a partner.

The question that popsinto most people’s heads when advised to flip their mattress is, “Why in the world should I even consider flipping a mattress?” The answer is simple, according to mattress manufactures: It will make the mattress last longer and prevent sagging, thus saving your back. A mattress that is flipped on a regular basis could last anywhere from 5-7 years longer than a mattress that hasn’t been flipped. Now, does this mean you should go on the far end of the spectrum and flip it twice a week for a grand total of 104 times a year? Back pain is more likely going to come from flipping your mattress that many times a year! The average you should flip your mattress is about once a month. This will prevent over-use in some spots.

Flipping your mattress is not the only thing you should be concerned with.  You also must make sure to turn it 180 degrees so that the whole mattress is being used and equally slept on. Permanent sags will eventually form if you do not flip or rotate your mattress. Most of the time these sags cannot be seen by the naked eye but they can lead to severe back pain. Sags tend to form in the middle of the mattress where two bodies meet. Pressure from both bodies can cause springs to loosen and not give the full support you need for proper rest.

So there you have it. Prevent back pain by flipping your mattress. And remember; always lift with your legs.
